Saw a neighbor's fire pit setup at a block party that made me rethink my whole backyard.

I was at our street's summer cookout in Columbus and this guy had built a simple stone ring with a gravel base about 8 inches deep. He said it took him one Saturday and cost under $100 for materials. I'd always thought a proper fire pit needed a fancy kit or a contractor. Now I'm sketching out a plan to do the same thing in my own yard this fall. Anyone have tips for picking the right type of gravel to use as a base?

Did you check if pea gravel drains well for that?

Pea gravel drains great, @kimr10, but you'll want a fabric layer underneath to keep it from mixing with the dirt.

Actually pea gravel can be a pain for drainage because those little round stones pack tight together over time. Water ends up pooling on top instead of going through like you'd expect. If you don't stay on top of it and clean out the debris, it turns into a muddy mess real quick.
