PSA: I was watering my raised beds wrong for 2 summers until my neighbor pointed at my hose
So I built four raised beds behind my garage two summers back and I was out there almost every night with the hose, standing there for like 15 minutes per bed. My neighbor Dale watched me do this for weeks and finally walked over and asked why I was soaking the leaves instead of the dirt. Turns out I was spraying the top of the plants every evening like I was washing a car, and half the water was just running off the sides or evaporating before it ever reached the roots. He told me to lay the hose down at the base and let it trickle for 20 minutes once or twice a week instead of a little bit every night. I tried it on my tomatoes first since those were the saddest looking ones and within about 10 days they perked up like crazy. Also switched to watering in the morning after that so the leaves dry off during the day instead of sitting wet all night, and my powdery mildew problem basically vanished. My water bill dropped about $18 a month too which I did not expect at all. Anyone else get schooled by a neighbor on something basic like this? Curious what other dumb stuff I might be doing back there that I just don't know about yet.
