Picked up a tip on crushed gravel for paths from an old timer at the lumber yard

Was grabbing some cedar mulch near Denver last weekend and this 70 year old guy loading pavers told me to skip the fancy path stuff and just use 3/4 inch crushed gravel with fines. He said it packs down so hard weeds barely come through and it drains way better than that decomposed granite I was gonna buy. I tried it on a 40 foot path behind my shed and after a week of rain its still solid. Anyone else use crushed gravel like this?

Hang on, I've gotta push back a little here. That crushed gravel with fines sounds great in theory, but I've cleaned it out of way too many people's gardens and it's a pain once it gets wet. The fines turn into basically mud that tracks all over the place when it's rainy, and it'll stick to your shoes and your dog's paws like nobody's business. Plus, if you ever want to change that path or dig anything up next to it, you're looking at a real chore because that stuff sets up like concrete. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I've seen folks regret it after a couple of wet seasons.
