Overheard a contractor warning about rebar stakes, glad I listened

I was at a lumber yard in Tulsa last week and heard a contractor telling a guy that galvanized rebar stakes can corrode through landscape fabric in about 18 months if you don't wrap the ends. He said he'd seen three separate backyard projects where the fabric ripped and weeds came back hard. Has anyone else dealt with that or do you just use plastic stakes instead?

Honestly the 18 month thing tracks, but the real issue is people hammer those stakes in crooked and the bend starts rubbing. I've seen fabric fail way faster from that than straight corrosion. Plastic stakes bend like crazy in Oklahoma clay too so neither option is perfect.
