Neighbor said my raised beds were too close to the fence, I moved them anyway

I built two 4x8 raised beds in my backyard in Austin and put them right along the shared fence to save sun space. My neighbor told me they would rot the fence boards and block his side from airflow, but I thought he was just being picky. Now 10 months later the fence is warping on his side and I have to tear the beds out and rebuild them 2 feet over, so was he right or should I have asked him to split the cost of a new fence first?
