My neighbor in Tucson watched me build a 6 ft gate for 3 weekends and gave one note: it should swing the other way
So I spent three weekends in April building a cedar gate at the side of my house, and my neighbor Ray watched the whole thing from his driveway with a lemonade like it was a ball game. On the last day he walked over, looked at the hinges, and said 'you know it should swing toward the yard, right?' I had already poured the posts and cut everything to fit that exact swing. He shrugged and went back to his chair. Now every time I haul the trash cans through it I have to think about my swing direction and Ray's smug little wave.
That "smug little wave" part got me because my buddy Dan went through almost the exact same thing last summer. He built a gate between his garage and fence, spent two weekends on it, and his father in law waited until the last screw was in before saying it should open out toward the alley. Dan just stood there holding his drill like an idiot. The worst part is the guy was right, because the trash cans hit the fence every single time now. Dan says he thinks about that comment every trash day, just like you. The real lesson here is that people who watch you work for weeks and say nothing until the end are never actually trying to help.
