My gate post took 6 hours because of ONE rock

I was digging a hole for a new cedar gate post in Portland last Saturday. Hit a frickin basalt rock the size of a basketball at exactly 3 feet down. Had to chip away at it with a digging bar for almost 4 hours before I could pull it out with a strap. Has anyone else dealt with buried rocks ruining a simple post hole project?

Wait, did you actually see it move or something? I used to think those weird shaped rocks were just kind of funny looking, like something you'd find in a gift shop. But after that one time I saw a big one shift a little in a creek bed, just a tiny wobble, I dunno, it kinda creeped me out. Like, maybe they're not just dead things after all. Now I totally get how someone could be convinced they're laughing at you, especially if you're alone out there.
