Heard my neighbor say 'I just use whatever soil is on sale' and finally understood my problem

Last Saturday I was out back repotting my tomatoes and my neighbor Steve from 3 doors down said that about his garden soil. I've been buying the cheap $3 bags at Home Depot for 2 years and wondered why my plants always look sad. Took his advice and spent $12 on a bag of Fox Farm and the difference in 2 weeks is wild. Anyone else have a 'duh' moment like that with something simple?

Man, $3 dirt is basically just paying someone to dump sand in a bag. I did the same thing for years with the cheap stuff from the big box store and my peppers looked like they were on life support. Switched to a bag of Ocean Forest last spring and my tomatoes went from sad to taking over the whole damn yard. Isn't it funny how we'll drop cash on fancy beer but cheap out on the literal ground our food grows in?

@troy832 you nailed it. I did the exact same thing with the cheap bags from the hardware store and my basil looked sad and yellow no matter what I did. Finally grabbed some Fox Farm last year and it was like night and day, everything just exploded. It's wild how much difference the soil makes, I guess you really do get what you pay for. Now I'm the guy telling everyone to just spend the extra few bucks on the good stuff.
