Chose a $40 hand auger over a gas powered one for post holes and boy was that a mistake

After 3 hours of sweating and only getting 2 holes dug 18 inches deep in clay soil I finally gave up and rented a power auger from Home Depot for $65 finishing the other 6 holes in under an hour has anyone else had better luck with hand tools for hard ground?

Ha, dude I feel your pain. My back still hurts just reading this. I thought I was being tough and frugal buying a hand auger for a fence line. Five holes in, I was basically just making a mud puddle and crying into it. The rental place loves people like us.

Oh absolutely, the rental place probably has a framed photo of me on their wall from when I rented that two-man gas auger for a day. I thought I was being smart too, trying to save money with a manual one for a few post holes. Three hours later I was seriously questioning every life choice that led me to that point. Now I just call a guy with a skid steer for anything more than a single hole. My back and my pride thank me every time.

You ever think maybe you just needed better form and a sharper blade?
