Vent: People keep planning 20 mile days on the John Muir Trail like it's normal

I've seen so many trip reports where folks map out 20 mile days for a week straight on the JMT, especially between Tuolumne Meadows and Red's Meadow. That's a huge elevation gain section with rough terrain, and most people just aren't ready for that pace. I tried it myself two years ago and was wrecked by day three, having to cut my mileage in half. On the other hand, some argue that with lightweight gear and training, big miles let you see more. But pushing too hard means you miss the whole point of being out there. What's a realistic daily distance for an average hiker on that trail, 12-15 miles?

My own 20 mile day on the JMT ended with me sleeping in a creek bed.

Pushing big miles can be a great way to cover ground if you know your limits. Some hikers actually enjoy the challenge and finish strong. John_flores sleeping in a creek sounds more like a planning mistake than a problem with the distance itself. A tough day doesn't mean the whole idea is bad, it just means you need the right fitness and a better spot to camp.

After my own 20 mile fail, I found 12 miles a day with my light pack was perfect, and @john_flores sleeping in a creek proves my point.
