Update: Picked the Sierra High Route over the JMT and I'm still not sure I made the right call
Five weeks ago I stood in the Lone Pine ranger station with two permits in my hand, one for the John Muir Trail and one for the Sierra High Route, and I went with the High Route because a guy at the hostel said the JMT was 'a highway with scenery.' Tbh the first 30 miles out of Road's End destroyed me, I did maybe 8 miles a day over talus and my knees were toast by the second night at Marion Lake. Ngl the views from White Fork Peak made the JMT look like a paved trail in a park, but I only saw two other people in nine days and one of them said I was 'brave or dumb.' Now I'm home in Sacramento looking at JMT vlogs and wondering if I missed the point by skipping the social side of it. Has anyone done both? Which one would you send a first timer on?
