Planning your whole trip around meals is the only way to do it... I nearly walked ten extra miles once just to get to a town with a decent diner. You gotta eat well out there.

It's funny you ask that... I honestly plan my routes to avoid towns most of the time. A big part of it for me is getting away from all that, not hiking toward a crowded burger joint. I'll pick a longer trail past a quiet lake over a shorter one to a diner any day. My food is just fuel, so I'd rather have the better views and the solitude.
