Two trails in Olympic National Park... one was a total mess
Did the Hoh River trail last weekend and it was just mud soup the whole way. Tried the Sol Duc Falls trail the next day and it was dry and gorgeous. Has anyone else had one trail ruin a whole trip for them?

Did you bring trekking poles for the Hoh? I swear they make ALL the difference on muddy trails, keeps you from post-holing every few steps. Was the Sol Duc really that much better or were you just relieved to have dry ground underfoot?

Totally agree with @wright.lisa on the poles, I never hit the Hoh without em. That mud is no joke, you'll sink right up to your shins if you're not careful. As for Sol Duc, honestly it was both - the trail was way less muddy but also the views opening up after all that slog felt like a reward. I think the Sol Duc loop has better elevation changes anyway, keeps things interesting. If you're doing both in one trip, bring those poles for sure and save your energy for the river crossings at Sol Duc.
