The Pacer's Paradox: Google Maps lied to me in the Tetons

I was planning a loop in the Tetons last month and decided to check the trail distance on Google Maps satellite mode. It said 8 miles, so I figured it would be a solid day hike. Turns out that number did NOT account for elevation gain, switchbacks, or the fact that the trail skirts a cliff for 2 miles. My GPS tracking app measured it at 11.4 miles and 3,200 feet of climbing. I hit the wall at mile 9 and had to sit on a rock for 20 minutes just to stop my legs from shaking. Has anyone else had a similar shock when comparing mapping apps to actual trail data? I'm thinking about using a dedicated backpacking route planner next time instead of my regular map app.
