My water filter cracked on day 3 of a 10-day trip in the Smokies
Went to filter water from a creek near Clingmans Dome. Pulled out my squeeze bag and the whole seam split. Dirty water everywhere. Had to boil everything for the rest of the trip. Carried extra fuel cans to make it work. Anyone else had a filter fail mid-route like that?

Did you try using a coffee filter as a pre-filter? Saved me once.

Man that sucks, "had to boil everything for the rest of the trip" is rough. My buddy Tom had his Sawyer freeze up on him overnight on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia, we spent the whole next day trying to thaw it out with body heat and nothing worked. Ended up borrowing some iodine tablets from a southbound hiker near Pearisburg and just accepting the weird taste for a week.
