My old way of packing for the John Muir Trail was a total joke

I used to bring a full roll of duct tape and a giant lantern, thinking I needed to be ready for anything. Last summer, after my pack felt like it weighed 50 pounds, I switched to a tiny headlamp and a few strips of repair tape. Anyone else have a silly gear habit they finally ditched?

My first backpacking trip I brought a full size camp stove and a cast iron skillet. I thought I needed a hot meal to be comfortable but that weight was insane. Now I just use a tiny backpacking stove and a single pot for everything.

I read a blog post about someone who used to pack a full bottle of camp soap. They switched to a tiny dropper bottle and it lasted the whole trip.

Used to bring a full towel, now just a bandana.
