My 10-year-old water filter finally gave out on the Lost Coast Trail last month.
The ceramic cartridge just cracked open, so I had to boil everything for two days. Anyone have a reliable filter they've used for a decade plus?

Man, that's rough luck on the Lost Coast. Boiling for two days sounds like a total pain. My old MSR MiniWorks EX ceramic filter lasted me a solid twelve years before the plastic housing finally got brittle and cracked. Thing was a tank. I just replaced it with the newer version, the Guardian purifier, because I wanted the virus protection too. It's heavy, but feels just as solid.

The Guardian is actually a purifier, not just a filter, which is the key difference. That's why it handles viruses while the MiniWorks doesn't. MSR made a good choice updating the name to show that.
