Just saw a map that shows the original John Muir Trail was 30 miles shorter than the current one
I was reading an old guidebook at the library and it mentioned the initial 1915 route from Yosemite to Mount Whitney was only about 210 miles before they added more scenic sections.

That old route would have saved my knees a solid day of complaining.

I hear you about the old route saving your knees, @thea_wood86, but I gotta disagree. That path always felt way longer to me, like it added an extra hour of just trudging along. My knees would be just as mad from the sheer boredom, you know? Sometimes the direct way, even if it's steeper, gets the pain over with faster.

Honestly that "pain over with faster" idea is a trap. Dragging my tired body up a steep climb just means I'm wrecked for the next day too. The longer route lets me keep a steady pace and actually enjoy the walk instead of just suffering through it. My knees might take a bit longer on the gentle path, but they don't scream at me later. A little extra time is worth it to not feel broken.
