I dropped $60 on a paper map for the Wind River Range and it was the best money I ever wasted

That map probably saved you from a real adventure (the kind you don't want).

Wasn't there a story a while back about some hikers who ignored a trail map and got totally lost for days? I remember reading they had to be rescued by helicopter. It's crazy how a simple piece of paper can make that much difference. Getting lost in the woods is my actual nightmare. That map was definitely the hero of the day!

Yeah, getting lost is a total nightmare, right? I got turned around on a trail once because I thought I remembered the way back. My phone died, and that old paper map in my bag was the only thing that got me out before dark. It's so easy to think you don't need it until you really, really do. Now I always check the map at every trail split, no matter how sure I am.
