Guy on a forum told me to ditch my heavy tent for a tarp, I laughed at him

That was 4 years ago, and after 200 miles on the AT last summer with a 7 pound pack, I finally get it. Has anyone else had to eat crow over gear advice you swore was wrong?

Haven't we all been there, though? I spent way too long convincing myself my 5 pound tent was non-negotiable because I was scared of bugs and rain. Then I borrowed a friend's tarp for a weekend trip, got caught in a downpour, and woke up dry as a bone. My tent is now collecting dust in the garage. It's humbling to admit the gear nerds were right, but man, that weight savings feels good on the trail.

Woke up dry as a bone" - that's how I felt after finally ditching my old sleeping bag for a quilt. Took me three years of shoving a giant bag into my pack before I realized I was just hauling extra weight for no reason.

@hernandez.blake I get it, but I think there's something to be said for a good old sleeping bag. My first quilt was fine until a cold snap hit and I was shivering all night with no hood to lock in heat. Tried adding a hat and neck gaiter but still felt drafts. Went back to my 2 pound bag and haven't looked back. Sometimes that extra weight is worth it for a solid seal around your face.
