GPS batteries used to last a week, now my phone dies by noon
Was digging through an old gear box last weekend and pulled out my Garmin eTrex from 2008. Popped in two AAs and it still fired right up. That thing ran for 6 days straight on the John Muir Trail back then, no problem. Meanwhile my phone with the map app barely makes it through a half day on the same stretch. Guess I just forgot how much we leaned on those dedicated units before everything got crammed into one device. Anyone else hang onto their old gear for the sheer battery life, or am I just being a dinosaur?

And it's not just GPS, you know... everything's like that now. I remember when a digital camera or an MP3 player could last a whole camping trip, now we're all tethered to a charger like it's a lifeline. We traded durability and long life for a pocket computer that does everything, but barely gets through one day of actual use...

Is it bad that I charge my phone in the car on the way to a campsite that has no service, just in case?
