Got caught in a hailstorm on the Longs Peak trail and it fixed my whole packing setup
Was about 2 miles past the Boulder Field on Longs Peak when a storm rolled in out of nowhere and dumped pea sized hail on me for 20 minutes. I had my rain shell buried at the bottom of my pack, so I got soaked digging for it while my buddy just pulled his out of a side pocket. Got home that night and dumped everything out of my bag, and now the first thing that goes in any pack is a rain layer right on top. Anybody else learn a packing lesson the hard way like this?
Buddy of mine had the same thing happen on a trip in the Winds. He swore by this whole system where his pack had like nine pockets and everything had its place. Storm hit us up on a pass and he spent ten minutes digging around for his shell while we all stood there getting pounded by sleet. Turns out his fancy system only worked when he remembered which pocket was which. He lost a glove in the mess too and never found it. Now he just stuffs the rain jacket in the top lid pocket and calls it good.
