Compared the classic JMT route vs the High Route and one was way better

I did the John Muir Trail last summer and the High Route the year before. The High Route kicked my butt with all the off-trail navigation but the views were unreal compared to the crowded JMT. Anyone else find that the harder route ends up being more worth it?

Can't believe you did the High Route before the JMT. That's like learning to run before you can walk.

Geez @nancy_ross, that's a hot take for sure! I actually think doing the High Route first was a GOOD thing. It taught me how to read maps and terrain without having a well worn trail to follow. The JMT felt like a vacation after that. Those crowds on the JMT though, man they get thick. I had to wait in line for a photo at Muir Pass. The High Route gave me that feeling of being truly alone in the mountains. It's WAY more worth it if you have the skills.
