A pair of $15 trail runners from a thrift store in Boulder changed my whole approach to lightweight hiking

I was hauling heavy boots through the Rockies for years until a guy at the hostel said try zero-drop shoes and now I can do 20 miles without my knees screaming, anyone else ditch boots for something lighter?

Man, I hear you on that knee thing. I switched to some beat up old trail runners a couple years ago and my legs felt 10 years younger after a long day on the trail... hard to go back once you feel the difference.

My buddy Dave switched to some beat up trail runners last year and he swore it saved his hiking life. He was having this sharp pain in his left knee that would start up around mile 4 every time we hit the hills. After the switch, he told me he made it through a 10-mile loop near his cabin and felt like he could have gone another 5. He said the lower drop just let his foot land more natural, like his whole leg was working together instead of fighting itself. I still tease him about wearing sneakers that look like they got run over by a truck, but he just grins and takes another step.
