That CAN bus gremlin took me 3 days to trace, check your ground straps first

Lost a whole afternoon on a 737 EICAS fault in Denver, turned out a corroded ground strap under the cockpit floor was the culprit, not the LRU I swapped. Has anyone else burned a weekend chasing a phantom that was just a bad ground?

Ground straps get blamed for everything when the real problem is usually something way more specific. I've seen plenty of cases where people rip out perfectly good wiring and chase corrosion that isn't there, all because some old timer swore it had to be a ground issue. The 737 EICAS system has multiple redundancies for a reason, and a single corroded strap would rarely cause the kind of intermittent fault you described. Most phantom faults in my experience trace back to bad pin seating or a connector that wasn't fully latched after the last maintenance visit. Ground straps are the easiest thing to blame because they're cheap to replace and make you feel productive, but they're rarely the actual root cause. You probably had a loose terminal or a wire chafing somewhere that just happened to test fine after the strap swap.
