My chat with a nervous pilot during a pre-flight check
I was on the line with a Cessna 172 recently. The pilot seemed worried about his comms cutting in and out. I figured it was just bad weather at first, but I decided to humor him and check. Turns out, there was a corroded connector in the audio panel. If I had brushed him off, we might have missed it. Now I always take a second to hear out any concerns, no matter how small. It makes the pilots feel valued and catches problems early. This simple habit has made my job easier and safer for everyone.

Hold on, how bad is a corroded connector really? Those audio panels fail all the time without causing crashes. Pilots have other ways to communicate, like squawking codes or using hand signals if it comes to it. It's good to check, but calling it a major safety win feels like a stretch.

Corroded connectors can do more than just kill the audio panel... they might take out the whole intercom system. In a busy terminal area, losing all comms means you can't hear traffic alerts or get runway changes. Squawking 7600 helps, but controllers can't give you vectors if you can't listen. Hand signals are useless in clouds or at night. Finding and fixing that corrosion before it causes a total failure is a big deal for safety.

Had a friend's bike light fail from corrosion, made him ride home in the dark without a way to signal.
