Dropped $310 on a magnet kit for my first haul from Phoenix to Denver, total waste
Bought one of those magnetic car shipping kits for my old Camry last month because a guy at the lot in Phoenix swore it protects the paint on open carriers. Got the car to Denver and the magnets had slid around, scratched the roof in 3 spots, and the kit did nothing for the dirt and rock chips that actually happened. Anyone else get talked into one of these or is it just me?
Man, I have to disagree with you on the kit itself because the real problem was that lot guy overselling it. A magnetic panel kit is not meant to stop rock chips or dirt, nothing stuck on the outside of a car will do that. What it does is sit between the panels and the straps or chains so metal does not rub metal, and that part works fine when it is put on right. The sliding and scratching tells me either the magnets were weak, the roof was not clean when they went on, or the carrier strapped over them wrong. For a first open haul you would have been better off just taking the chips as normal wear and spending that $310 on a good wash and clay bar when it got to Denver. Sorry your roof got gouged though, that part is fair to be mad about.
