Tried to quiet a squeaky serpentine belt on my buddy's '08 Civic with a bar of soap (like the old-timers said) and it started smoking like a campfire.

Lol the old-timers gave some wild advice. My friend tried the soap trick on his truck and the belt just shredded itself. Some things are better left to the parts store.

The soap trick only works for a few minutes to get you home. It's a temporary fix, not a long term solution. If the belt was already worn out, it would have failed anyway. Your friend's belt was probably ready to go.

Man that sounds rough, did it mess up the belt or just make a huge mess? I feel for you, those old school tricks can really backfire sometimes. It's one of those things you hear about and think it's worth a shot. At least now you know for sure that belt needed replacing right away. Hope it didn't cause any other problems under the hood.
