That $340 'special' scan tool was a total waste of my Friday

Bought one of those fancy dealer-level scan tools off a truck last month, thought it would do everything. Spent 5 hours Friday trying to program a used TCM on a 2017 Chevy Cruze for a customer. Turns out it needs a security gateway bypass module that costs another $200. The truck guy never mentioned that. Ended up borrowing my buddy's older laptop with the cracked software and it took 20 minutes. Customer paid me for the hour, but I ate the rest. Has anyone else got burned by these upsell tools, or am I the only one dumb enough to trust the hype?

Man I went through three of those truck tools over the years and they all had some catch. That 2017 Cruze is a pain in the ass for programming anyway, the security gateway thing is a known deal, not some hidden secret. Five hours though, that's on you man, after the first hour you shoulda known something was off. The cracked laptop software has been doing this job for a decade and it's free, so why are folks still dropping $500 on a shiny box? I get it, the truck guy talks a good game and you want to feel like a pro, but at the end of the day it's just a tool with a big price tag. You didn't get burned, you just paid for the lesson that the hype is always louder than the actual function.
