Talked to a 30 year diesel tech yesterday. Changed how I see oil changes.

He said most guys overtorque drain plugs by 15 ft-lbs. Then showed me a cracked oil pan from a F-250. He does it finger tight plus a quarter turn now. You guys ever check your torque specs against what the shop manual says?

My buddy Dave had a 2008 Duramax and thought he knew better than the manual. He put that plug on with a ratchet and gave it an extra grunt. Next oil change he found the threads coming out with the plug. Cost him 700 bucks for a new oil pan from the dealer plus labor. He still brings it up anytime someone talks torque specs.

My buddy stripped his plug doing exactly that, cost him 400 bucks for a new pan.
