Overheard a customer say their last mechanic 'fixed' a check engine light by clearing the code
I was checking in a 2015 Civic last Tuesday when the owner mentioned their old shop just erased the code and sent them on their way. Three weeks later the light came back and they ended up with a bad catalytic converter from ignoring it too long. That shortcut cost them $1,200 instead of a $150 O2 sensor fix upfront. It reminded me how important it is to explain what a code really means, not just hit clear. How do you handle folks who just want the light off without paying for a proper diag?

@finleyh89 I get what you're saying, and you're right that not every CEL is the end of the world, but clearing the code without telling the customer what caused it is still bad practice. A loose gas cap is one thing, but a mechanic who just hits clear and sends you on your way isn't giving you a fair chance to decide what to do. Even if the cat converter wasn't completely the shop's fault, ignoring that light cost the owner a lot more money down the road.

...and I mean, how often does that really happen though? Clearing a code on a 2015 Civic isn't gonna nuke a cat converter in three weeks unless there was already something else wrong. Plenty of times it's just a loose gas cap or a fluke sensor glitch. People act like every CEL is the apocalypse but half the time it's a 10 dollar fix and a reset. I'd rather a mechanic be upfront about that than scare everyone into a full diag they don't need.

holy cow, a 2015 Civic and they just cleared the code and sent them out the door? that's wild to me. like, okay sure maybe a gas cap is one thing but if the code was for something emissions related and they didn't even suggest a quick look, that's just asking for trouble. I've seen cars come in after that kind of thing and it's always a bigger headache than if they'd just spent 10 minutes checking it first. people really underestimate how fast a small issue can snowball into a major repair bill.
