Old timer told me to just use brake cleaner on a MAF sensor
My coworker Dave swore up and down that brake cleaner works fine on mass air flow sensors, said he's done it for 20 years. Well I tried it on a 2014 F-150 and it trashed the sensor, truck ran like garbage for a week until I dropped $65 on a new one. Has anyone else had a shop legend give you advice that cost you money?

$65 is cheap compared to some MAF sensors, brake cleaner ain't it.

Wait, so did you actually use brake cleaner on the MAF, or was that a joke about the pricing? Because @kelly385 is right about drying time, but the real issue with brake cleaner is it can leave a film that messes with the hot wire element. I've heard of people using it in a pinch, but at $65 for a new sensor, you gotta wonder if it's worth the gamble. Did it throw any codes after you cleaned it, or are you still running it?

Did you clean it or just spray it straight on, because you gotta let it dry completely first.
