My old master tech told me to use the cheap torque wrench, I laughed at him

Back in 2018 at a shop outside Phoenix, my 30 year veteran mentor said the $40 harbor freight torque wrench was good enough for lug nuts. I argued with him for a solid 10 minutes about calibration and safety. Then he showed me the snap-on one he had for 15 years that never got recertified once. I ran my own little test on 50 cars over two months, marked every lug with paint. Zero comebacks, zero stripped studs, and honestly the readings matched my expensive one when I borrowed a buddy's digital adapter. Now I still buy the cheap click types for anything under 150 ft lbs, and I only question people who swear you need to drop $300. Anyone else ever get proven wrong by an old timer like that?
