Just realized I was over-torquing every single drain plug for years. A fleet manager in Phoenix told me I was crushing the gaskets, costing him $80 a month in replacements.

It's the same with a lot of routine tasks. People get comfortable and add a little extra force, thinking more is better. You see it with jar lids, garden hose fittings, even tightening screws on a kid's toy. That tiny bit of overkill adds up to broken parts and wasted money everywhere.

Snug plus a quarter turn" is right, I learned that the hard way with a kitchen faucet.

My old shop teacher always said it's just "snug plus a quarter turn." That Phoenix guy's story is a perfect example of why torque specs exist, even for simple stuff. You can't feel that extra few foot-pounds, but the gasket sure can. It's a cheap lesson that saves a ton of money and headaches down the line.
