Independent shops vs dealerships after a factory scan tool demo

I stopped by a Mercedes dealer in Denver last week and watched them pull up live data on a 2022 C300 that my shop spent an hour digging for via generic OBD tools. I mean, is it worth paying $180 an hour for factory software when a $4,000 aftermarket setup gets you 90% there, or are we just fooling ourselves? Has anyone else hit a wall that only the dealer could crack?
