I finally stopped fighting with a clutch job and tried a new trick

Stopped by a transmission shop in Portland last Tuesday while waiting for parts and watched a guy use a pilot tool I'd never seen, just a simple plastic alignment rod with a tapered end. Took him maybe 10 minutes to get the disc centered and the trans stabbed in. I've been doing it with a screwdriver and a prayer for 6 years, this thing cost like 15 bucks. Anyone else found a random tool that saved you hours on a job you hate?

The real trick was making you think 15 bucks was expensive for a tool.

Shook my head reading that because its so true. They got us trained to think anything under 20 bucks is a steal now. Remember when a solid screwdriver set was like 5 dollars and lasted forever? Now we pay 15 for one that strips out after a month and call it a deal. Crazy how they flipped the whole game on us.
