I bought a $280 brake lathe off a tool truck and it sat in my shop for 8 months
A Snap-on guy talked me into an on-car brake lathe at a shop in Amarillo last spring, swore it would pay for itself in rotor jobs within 3 months. I used it twice, both times the finish was worse than just handing the rotors to the NAPA machine shop down the street for $12 a piece, and it has been collecting dust in the corner since. Anyone else got a tool truck story where the pitch was better than the product?
A buddy of mine got talked into one of those fancy diagnostic smoke machines off the MAC truck, guy told him it would find every vacuum leak in minutes and he would be the leak guy in town. He dropped almost $700 on it and it worked fine for about a month, then the heating element quit and the replacement part cost him another $150. He said the smoke was so thin he could barely see it anyway, and he ended up going back to the old trick of spraying carb cleaner around the intake. Last I heard the thing is sitting on a shelf behind his parts washer with the cord wrapped around it. The truck guys are great salesmen, I will give them that, but the follow up when something breaks is where it all falls apart.
