Hot take: is charging diag time even when the car fixes itself in the bay fair or shady?
Last month a 2016 Civic came in with a misfire that had me chasing my tail for two hours, and right as I went to pull the plugs it smoothed out on its own. I ran it another 20 minutes with the scanner hooked up and the code never came back, so I told the customer what happened and still wrote down 1.5 hours of diag at $145 an hour. Half the guys I know say that time is mine because I did the work and found nothing, and the other half say you can't bill someone for a problem that vanished in your own hands. The customer actually paid it without a word, but I sat in my truck in the lot off Maple Ave for a bit after feeling weird about it. Do you bill the full diag when the fault ghosts you, or do you eat it and keep the customer? And if you eat it, where does that money come from when it happens three times in a pay period?
