Found out the average car on the road is 12.6 years old now, which explains every weird noise I hear
Saw this stat from S&P Global last week. 12.6 years. That is the oldest the average car has ever been in this country. I work on stuff every day that has 200k on the clock and the owner just wants to keep it going. Twenty years ago guys were trading in at 5 or 6 years. Now nobody can afford a new one at these prices and rates. So we are all doing timing chains and transmissions on cars that should be at the junkyard. Honestly it is job security but it is also why half my bay is full of jobs that turn into 3 day nightmares. What is the highest mileage car you have had in your bay this month?
That "12.6 years" number really does line up with what my buddy sees at his shop. He told me he's got a guy right now waiting on parts for a 2011 with 280k on it, and the repair costs more than the car is worth, but the guy says he can't swing a payment on anything newer. I read somewhere that the average new car payment is like $700+ a month now, which is just insane to me. So yeah, people are holding onto old cars and fixing them over and over because what else are they gonna do. My buddy's bay has turned into a graveyard of high mileage rides that keep coming back. He had one in last week with 340k, I want to say it was an old Camry.
