Customer swore his alternator was bad, so I sold him one, and now I'm out $180
Guy rolls into my bay off Route 9 in Poughkeepsie on a Tuesday, tells me his battery light keeps flickering and he already "knows" the alternator is toast because a buddy put a meter on it. I checked the cables, saw the ground strap to the frame was green with corrosion, and told him that was the real problem, but he would not hear it. He swore the meter read 11.2 volts so I caved and swapped the alternator, which took me 90 minutes on that cramped 2013 Civic. Next morning his car is dead again in the parking lot, and sure enough it was the corroded ground the whole time. He wants his money back plus the towing, and my service writer says we eat it to keep the review, so that part and my afternoon are just gone. How do you all handle a customer who diagnoses his own car and then pins the comeback on you?
