Changed my mind about those cheap code readers from Harbor Freight
I always thought the $39 Pittsburgh scanner was just a basic tool for clearing check engine lights, nothing more. But last week, a guy at the truck stop in Amarillo showed me his could read live ABS sensor data on his old Silverado, which helped him pinpoint a bad wheel speed sensor. I had to eat my words and bought one the next day. Anyone have a go-to cheap tool that surprised them with what it can actually do?

Still seems like a waste of money to me.

Yeah, that "just a basic tool" idea is what gets you. I read a forum post where a guy used one to check transmission temp on an old Ford, which is wild for the price.

Seems like a stretch to me. Those cheap tools usually fail when you need them most. I'd rather spend a bit more on something that won't break.
