A 30 year master tech at my shop in Toledo said my torque wrench never leaves my hand, and it stuck with me
Back in 2008 I was doing a brake job on a Camry and he watched me hit every single bolt with the torque wrench, even the caliper bracket bolts that just needed to be snug. He said the guys who last in this trade learn which fasteners get the click and which ones you can feel by hand, and I admitted I was scared of comebacks so I overdid it on everything. Where did you pick up your feel for which bolts really need a wrench and which ones you can trust your arm on?
The old guy basically told you that you were doing it wrong and then walked off to go drink coffee for an hour. Next thing you know he'll say the impact gun never leaves his hand either.
