Used to swear by lacquer thinner for cleaning guns, now I won't touch the stuff.

A painter in Denver showed me how it was eating away the plastic caps on our mix cups after a $200 batch went bad. Switched to acetone last month and haven't had a single issue since. Anyone else ditch lacquer thinner after a nasty surprise?

Oh man, yes! I had a similar nightmare with lacquer thinner eating through a little plastic filter I used for years. It just dissolved it into a nasty mess one day and ruined a whole batch of stain I was mixing. I switched to acetone for everything now and it's been smooth sailing. So glad I'm not the only one who learned that lesson the hard way.

Wait, so you used the same filter for YEARS and it just gave up one day? That's brutal. Almost worse than it failing right away. Like it waited until you got comfortable. I bet that stain was a total loss too. Acetone is definitely the safer bet for plastic stuff. Lesson learned the hard way is right, but at least we all stick together in our shared misery.
