Had to pick between a Uni-spotter and stud welder on a rusted quarter panel

Got a 1998 Civic in the shop last week with a quarter panel rusted so bad the outer skin was basically gone. Went with the stud welder over the Uni-spotter because I figured I'd have better control on the shrunken metal. Turned out okay but I spent way too long on the finishing. Anyone here swear by one over the other for this kind of rust work?

Man I feel you on that... spent a whole Saturday on a 98 Civic myself and the finishing just drags on forever. The stud welder gives you way better control on that crumbly rusted metal but yeah, you end up chasing high spots all day. I started using a slide hammer too and it cut my time by like a third, just wish it didn't leave those tiny witness marks.

Grabbed a stud welder for almost the same job on an old Accord and yeah, the control on thin, shrunken metal is way better (especially when the rust pits are unpredictable like that). But I found my finishing time dropped a ton when I started using a cheap dent puller slide hammer combo instead of just prying with pliers. That extra leverage saved me from making so many high spots that needed shrinking back down.

1991 Accord driver's door took me 3 hours with that same setup last week.
