Dropped $340 on a paint thickness gauge and it saved me from a huge mess

Customer swore his truck had never been repainted, but the gauge read 12 mils on the passenger door versus 4 on the rest. Turned out a body shop in Dallas did a hack repair job and hid it with heavy primer. Anyone else catching stuff like this or do most of you just trust your eyes?
