Dropped $1,100 on a good spot welder, best money or worst money?

Some guys in my shop swear a $200 Harbor Freight unit does the same job on thin panels, but mine paid for itself in a month on a frame job in Tucson. What did you spend on one tool that either saved your shop or sat in the corner collecting dust?
