Customer told me my primer coat was too thick and they were right

Had a guy bring his F-150 back last month because he said the paint on the driver door started peeling after 6 months. I was about to blame the paint quality until he pointed out the primer was applied way too heavy on that panel. He showed me where it was cracking along the edge. I checked my other jobs and sure enough I was laying it on thick thinking more protection = better. Now I do 2 thin coats at 15 minute flash times instead of one thick coat. Has anyone else had to unlearn bad habits from when they started out?

Did you ever figure out why that primer fails when its too thick? I had a similar wake up call when I was spraying cabinets and kept getting this orange peel texture. Turns out I was rushing the flash time between coats. Now I set a timer on my phone for 10-12 minutes and give each coat a proper dry. The finish comes out way smoother and I havent had any peeling issues since. I also switched to a finer tip on my spray gun for primer coats, that helped a ton too.

20 years painting and I've never had an issue with one thick coat of primer.

Dude same here. I was laying it on like butter thinking thicker was bulletproof. Had a buddy call me out on a tailgate job where the primer started spiderwebbing at the edges after a month. Switched to the same method you described, two thin passes with a solid flash time in between. Night and day difference. Now I also hit it with a quick tack cloth between coats to catch any dust that settled. Haven't seen a single crack or peel since I made that change.
