A customer in Denver told me my paint match was off because I was looking at it under the wrong light

He pulled his truck out of my bay into the morning sun, pointed at the fender, and said 'You mixed for shop light, not daylight.' I had to redo the whole blend panel after that, which cost me about two hours and a fresh quart of base. How do you guys check your color matches before a job leaves?

Actually, that customer had a fair point about checking in natural light. Sunlight shows true color better than any shop bulb can. It's worth the extra minute to roll a panel outside before calling a job done.

Ever notice how many arguments come from people seeing the same thing in different light?

My uncle worked at a print shop for thirty years and they had this whole wall of different light bulbs, like daylight, office fluorescent, even old home lamp types. He said customers would argue over brochure colors until he showed them the paper under each bulb. The same bright red ink looked totally different under every single one. It taught me light changes everything, not just paint.
