Chose to film my mate's tradie rant on my phone instead of a proper camera and it somehow hit 400k views
So last month my mate Dave was doing a job in Geelong and he went on this huge rant about customers who watch one Bunnings tutorial and think they know everything. I had my old iPhone in my pocket and a borrowed Canon camera sitting on the ute seat, and I stood there for like 10 seconds deciding which one to grab. I went with the phone because the camera had a dead battery and I could not be bothered finding the charger. Shot it vertical, no tripod, just shaky handheld footage of him going off for about 90 seconds. Posted it that night on a whim and woke up to 400,000 views and comments from people tagging their partners. The camera version would have been cleaner but I honestly think the shaky phone thing is why it worked, it looked real instead of staged. Now Dave keeps texting me asking when we are filming the next one and I have no idea what to tell him. Has anyone else found that the rough phone clips outperform the stuff you actually plan out?
Have you noticed how the planned stuff always flops while the random throwaway clip blows up? Same thing happened to me last year when my brother in law was having a whinge about a client who kept changing the quote, I grabbed my phone off the kitchen bench and got him mid sentence, shaky as anything, and it did way better than the videos I actually sat down and edited with titles and music. The messy ones feel like you are just standing there with your mates, not making a ad. I reckon Dave should just keep doing what he does and you keep the phone handy, the second you start planning a "series" it turns fake and people can smell it. Tell him the next one happens when it happens, no set up, no script, just press record when he starts going off.
