The time a park ranger told me my telescope was pointed at the wrong star and he was right

Wait, was it actually the "wrong star" or just misaligned?
Little detail there that matters. The ranger said the wrong star, not just a slightly off scope. That means you were tracking something completely different than what you thought. That's a bigger mistake than a finder scope being off by a finger's width.
If you'd been off by a tiny bit, you'd still find your target eventually by scanning around. But pointing at a whole different star means you were looking at a completely different part of the sky. You would have been trying to find Andromeda in the middle of Cassiopeia or something.
So yeah, that's a whole different level of being wrong. Good on the ranger for catching it early.

Jumped right into that story expecting a joke but it was actually a solid lesson. That ranger probably saved you from wasting a whole night chasing the wrong data. It's easy to get stubborn when you think you're right about something you know well. Sometimes the best tip comes from someone who sees the sky from a different angle. Bet you double check your star charts now before setting up.

Took a similar hard lesson at a star party once. Had my scope pointed at what I swore was Andromeda for a whole hour. Someone walked over, barely glanced, and just tapped the finder scope. Turned out it was off by a finger's width. Felt stupid at first but that's the thing. Pride burns more time than asking for help ever will. Now I hand over my eyepiece to anyone nearby before I even start.
